WASHINGTON (Map, News) - D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty has kicked off a summer jobs program that he says will lead to a greener, cleaner capital.

Fenty says 800 residents ranging in age from 14 to 21 will participate in this year's Green Summer Job Corps. Employees will participate in projects across the city that focus on four areas: energy, watersheds, parks and trees.

President Barack Obama's special adviser for green jobs, Van Jones, praised the program for giving D.C. youths the skills to excel in green industries of the future.

The green jobs program began last summer and had about 400 participants. The city says the program and D.C.'s Conservation Corps are the largest green-collar jobs training effort in the country.
